Rev. James Lawson Jr. has taught Nonviolence at UCLA for the past 17 years. In 2018, he received the UCLA Medal, the University’s highest honor. In carrying on his legacy, we will be sponsoring an annual Nonviolence lecture and awarding scholarships to UCLA students engaged in the theory and practice of nonviolence.

The first Nonviolence Speaker will be State Senator María Elena Durazo, who became President of the Hotel Workers Union #11 thirty years ago. She worked with Rev. Lawson to embrace the philosophy of nonviolence to transform the organization into one of the most dynamic unions in the country, led mainly by immigrant workers.
