Sophia Cheng is a lecturer in the UCLA Department of Asian American Studies. She currently teaches the service-learning course AAS 140SL, “Power to People: Asian American and Pacific Islander Community-Based Learning,” which places students in AAPI-serving community-based organizations in Greater L.A. Sophia was introduced to worker centers and the labor movement a decade ago and has been working with Asian and Latinx immigrant communities ever since. She has worked as an organizer and trainer at the Restaurant Opportunities Center, Southeast Asian Community Alliance, Advancing Justice – Los Angeles, and was a founding member of Chinatown Community for Equitable Development. Currently, she is a campaign director at KIWA (Koreatown Immigrant Workers Alliance).
