Tritia Toyota is Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology and is a Research Scholar at the Asian American Studies Center with the University of California, Los Angeles. She is the author of Envisioning America: New Chinese Americans and the Politics of Belonging. She also wrote and produced the documentary Asian America. She is a recipient of the Award for Excellence in Graduate Mentoring and Teaching from the UCLA Asian American Studies Graduate Student Association.

Discussants for the event are Valerie Matsumoto and Yasuko Takezawa. Valerie Matsumoto is the UCLA George and Sakaye Aratani Chair on the Japanese American Incarceration, Redress and Community and a Professor of History and Asian American Studies. Yasuko Takezawa is a Visiting Professor serving as the Terasaki Chair in U.S.-Japan Relations with UCLA Terasaki Center for Japanese Studies for 2023-2024.

AAS 174B: This course is designed to incite student curiosity, foster sense of community, and expand capacity to critically approach familiar assumptions about transnational flows of culture, cultural materials, and goods of various Asian American communities. Students will navigate through vibrant Asian American communities in Los Angeles and beyond to expand their understanding. Students will analyze Asian American community roles in global shifts of various cultural production and consumption (e.g., art, food, media, music, politics, and more) and an examination of how communities are impacted by transnational flows. Students will interact directly with Asian American communities and spaces including those of nonprofit organizations, local artists, and events.

AAS 187C: Though South Asians are currently the fastest-growing racial group in the U.S., they are not new to this nation. From ship-jumpers, to railway builders, to celebrity gurus, to papermill laborers - South Asian American lives are deeply embedded in a rich history of resistance and resilience that is often marginalized and never told. This course will examine the historical and contemporary narratives of how South Asian American identities and communities have formed and how to retell community stories with a re-centered lens. The course incorporates historical and contemporary readings of South Asian communities; guest speakers; podcasts, documentaries and other multimedia content; archival research; interactive in-class discussions; the opportunity to develop your own podcast. Students will develop critical analytical skill of historical narrative and contemporary content. This course is taught by Manjusha Kulkarni and Taz Ahmed!

Spotlighting our amazing lecturers for AAS 187C: Tanzila "Taz" Ahmed!

Tanzila “Taz” Ahmed is a political strategist, storyteller, and artist based in Los Angeles. She creates at the intersection of counternarratives and culture-shifting as a South Asian American Muslim 2nd-gen woman. She’s turned out over 500,000 Asian American voters, recorded five years of the award winning #GoodMuslimBadMuslim podcast and makes #MuslimVDay cards annually. Her essays are published in the anthologies, New Moons, Pretty Bitches, Whiter, Good Girls Marry Doctors, Love Inshallah, and in numerous online publications. She has published two poetry collections Emdash and Ellipses (2016) & The Day The Moon Split in Two (2020), is featured in Tia Chucha’s Coiled Serpent (2016) and her poetry has been commissioned by the Center for Cultural Power, PolicyLink, the Garment Worker Center, KPCC’s Unheard LA, and more. In Spring 2019 she was UCLA’s Activist-in-Residence at the Institute on Inequality and Democracy, in Summer 2017 was Artist-in-Residence at Shangri La Museum of Islamic Art Culture & Design, and in 2016 received an award from President Obama’s White House as a Champion of Change in Art and Storytelling. A protest sign she designed for the 2017 Women’s March sits in the permanent archives of the Smithsonian Museum of American History.

Enroll in Asian American Studies 187C: South Asian American Communities, taught by Manjusha Kulkarni and Taz Ahmed!

South Asians were the fastest-growing racial group in the U.S. according to the 2020 census. Yet South Asians still occupy a precarious and constantly shifting space in the American racial landscape. Students will ask and discuss a multitude of questions surrounding South Asian identity, experience, and community formation. This course incorporates readings from ethnic studies, law, and academic journals; guest speakers; documentaries and media clips; in-class discussion; and group projects to explore these questions. Additional outcomes for students include the development of critical and analytical, writing, speaking, and presentation skills.
