SUMMARY:Trauma-Informed Yoga for Survivors 8-Week Series
DESCRIPTION:We will offer an 8-week trauma-informed yoga series for survivors of sexual assault\, dating and domestic violence\, and/or stalking in the fall. Please see below for more information and feel free to share with any students\, staff\, or faculty who would benefit from participating in this healing modality. Interest forms are due September 28\, 2018 (located on our website and attached). Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions! As always\, thank you so much for your support and referrals. \n  \nTrauma-Informed Yoga for Survivors \n  \nMission and Goals \nUCLA CARE believes in all forms of healing and this program will explore reconnection to the self through mind\, body\, and spirit. In Bennett’s book\, Emotional Yoga\, she reminds us that our emotions often times act as a bridge between our bodies and minds\, which are intimately intertwined and connected with our emotions (2002). This program will provide survivors of sexual violence a means of becoming reacquainted with their bodies\, help them become grounded in the present moment\, and allow them to explore the benefits of mindfulness as they flow breath to movement in guided practice and meditation. \nMemories of sexually violent experiences can be intrusive\, which can create challenges for survivors. These memories can also make it difficult for survivors who are looking to establish connection in their lives and learn how to trust again. The entire experience of practicing yoga\, can help survivors find union between seemingly disconnected and challenging aspects of the self; allowing participants to slowly build the pieces into an integrated whole. In The Body Remembers: The Psychophysiology of Trauma and Treatment\, Rothschild recognizes the need for therapy to consist of helping people to stay in their bodies and to delve deeper into understanding these important bodily sensations (2000).Yoga’s focus on self-acceptance provides survivors with tangible benefits that will become noticeable throughout their practice. This gradual integration can be transformational and healing for a survivor of sexual violence. \n  \nProgram Structure \nYoga as Healing will be an 8-week program taking place during fall 2018. The class will meet Tuesdays from 11am to 1pm. Each class offers survivors a safe space to gain greater awareness around strength\, stability\, assertiveness\, and mindfulness. Classes will have different themes\, focus on various restorative postures\, build strength in the core\, explore positive affirmations\, and will also be coupled with guided activities including de-briefing exercises\, journaling\, and art. Classes will allow survivors to re-connect with themselves and build community with their peers. \nClasses will establish consistency and will build upon each other each week. \n  \nProgram Dates \nYoga as healing interest forms due- September 28\, 2018  \n8 week fall yoga as healing series (Tuesdays) \nSession 1: October 9\, 2018\, 11am-1pm (orientation) \nTheme: Intention \nSession 2: October 16\, 2018\, 11am-12:30pm \nTheme: Safety \nSession 3: October 23\, 2018\, 11am- 1pm (art class) \nTheme: Mindfulness and Self-care \nSession 4: October 30\, 11am-12:30pm \nTheme: Boundaries \nSession 5: November 6\, 2018\, 11am-12:30pm \nTheme: Assertiveness \nSession 6: November 13\, 11am-12:30pm \nTheme: Strength \nSession 7: November 20\, 2018\, 11am-12:30pm \nTheme: Trust \nSession 8: November 27\, 2018\, 11am-1pm (closing and drumming) \nTheme: Acceptance and Community \n  \nZabie Yamasaki\, M.Ed. \nProgram Director\, Trauma Informed Programs \nCampus Assault Resources and Education (CARE) and UCLA Campus and Student Resilience \n(310) 825-5759 \nzyamasaki@careprogram.ucla.edu \n  \nFor more information on resources and support\, visit: \nwww.careprogram.ucla.edu and www.sexualviolence.ucla.edu \n  \nConfidential Resources \nCARE Advocate \nResource navigation\, support\, and advocacy \nTo make an appointment with the CARE Advocate\, call 310-206-2465 or e-mail advocate@careprogram.ucla.edu \nCAPS \nCounseling for sexual assault\, dating and domestic violence\, and stalking. SUMMARY:Fall Cleaning? Donate to the Gender Gap Clothing Drive
DESCRIPTION:The UCLA Gender Gap Clothing Drive is an initiative to provide gender-affirming clothing to our students\, particularly those who may not have the means to purchase clothing reflective of their gender identity/expression. Gender-affirming professional clothing is also a large concern for transgender and gender-nonconforming students as they begin to apply for internships and full-time positions. \n  \nI invite you to support our students by donating any clothing items in good condition\, particularly professional attire. Following the drive we will be hosting a clothing exchange where trans\, non-binary\, and gender-nonconforming students can select clothing that matches their identities. This will happen from November 12th to November 14th. \n  \nWe are collecting donations from November 5th-November 9th  at the LGBT Campus Resource Center. Please consider taking a few moments over the weekend to peruse your closets and help us in supporting students. \n  \nThank you for your continued support of trans\, non-binary\, and gender-nonconforming students.

SUMMARY:Eagle and the Condor Liberation Front-Third World College
DESCRIPTION:Students\, On behalf of the Eagle and the Condor Liberation Front\, a political inter-tribal organization at UCLA\, we invite you to attend a plática/conversation on the concept of the Third World College and how students might organize to participate\, sustain\, and build a decolonizing university. We as an Indigenous organization do not believe that an institution like UCLA will ever be decolonized nor fully work in favor of the community. As students\, it is our imperative that we create and transform those tools the university holds in order to do that decolonizing work. In the spirit of the Third World College\, we hope to create temporal yet persevering projects that disrupt settler colonialism acting through the university. We will only center Students of Color and Indigenous student voices. Please join us on November 15th\, 2018 at 6 PM in Haines A82.

SUMMARY:Beyond Zip Codes: Unpacking the Place-Health Nexus (Paul Ong\, PhD)
DESCRIPTION:DESCRIPTION\nA joint endeavor hosted by the UCLA Ziman Center for Real Estate’s Housing as Health Care Initiative\, the UCLA Center for Neighborhood Knowledge\, the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research and the UCLA Center for Occupational and Environmental Health \n“Beyond Zip Codes: Unpacking the Place-Health Nexus”presented by: Paul Ong\, PhD (Research Professor and Director of the UCLA Center for Neighborhood Knowledge) \nPlace matters\, as captured by the statement that asserts that a person’s zip code is a better predictor of health status than the person’s DNA. Social determinants of health are intertwined with the urban spatial structure\, residential patterns and the geography of opportunities. SUMMARY:TIFFANY LYTLE / JOY ALPUERTO RITTER – FOR HER
DESCRIPTION:An evening of two performances that explore women’s lives: Tiffany Lytle Qnoum Kaun Khmer/I am a Cambodia Child and Joy Alpuerto Ritter’s Babae. Drawing movement and musical influences from contemporary dance\, hip hop fusion\, pop music\, jazz\, and Southeast Asian folk and traditional dance performance and stories\, Lytle and Ritter both dynamically present Southeast Asian women in the diaspora in their solo pieces. \nAs the child of a Cambodian refugee raised in multiple worlds that make up Cambodiatown of Long Beach/San Pedro\, Tiffany Lytle sonically explores refugee experiences and Cambodian diasporic lives in Qnoum Kaun Khmer/I am a Cambodian Child. With a team of Los Angeles’ best pop/jazz musicians\, Lytle’s musical performance reimagines pop music as an expression of displacement that is the defining state of living for so many around the world at this time. \nJoy Alpuerto-Ritter was born in Los Angeles\, and raised in Berlin\, Germany. In her solo piece Babae (the word for woman in Filipino)\, she reinterprets expressionist modern dance pioneer Mary Wigman’s Hexentanz (English translation from German—Witch Dance) through folk and traditional dances of the Philippines that she grew up learning and performing in the diaspora. Babae reorients a classic that breaks open the power of women. \nIN ADVANCE: $25 general admission / $20 student & senior \nAT THE DOOR: $30 general admission / $20 student & senior
