Ponce \nProfessor\, Health Policy and Management \nUCLA \nTuesday\, April 30 at 3 p.m. \nCharles E. Young Research Library Main Conference Room \n  \n  \nIn this talk\, Ponce will focus on health survey data in California and in national surveys for American Indian Alaska Native and Asian subgroup information. A health economist\, Ponce’s research contributes to the elimination of racial/ethnic and social disparities in health and health care in three areas: multicultural survey research\, social penalties in health access\, and global and immigrant health. \n  \nPonce is a professor in the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health’s Department of Health\, and Director of the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research. She is the Principal Investigator for the California Health Interview Survey\, the largest health survey in the nation. Ponce received a BA in science from UC Berkeley\, an MA in public policy from Harvard University\, and a PhD in health services at UCLA. \n  \nLight refreshments will be served. With such a large scope provided by the topic of mental health\, our hope this week is to narrow it down and address how it manifests itself within the Asian American community. We hope to increase awareness by providing information\, support\, and a comfortable space. \nThough in recent times there has been increased awareness and acceptance\, it is still difficult for many of us to not only share our struggles but also feel sincerely acknowledged. Specifically within the Asian American community\, it is very common to overlook mental health and remain silent. Our goal is to empower each other to “find your voice\,” whether that may be through speaking about your own experiences\, learning how to be there for others\, or simply getting comfortable with the topic. \nRemember\, you are not alone. DESCRIPTION:Raising Awareness Through the Arts: Sulong Theatre Collective and Migrant Filipina Workers in Canada \nSpeaker: Professor Eleanor Ty\, Fulbright Canada Visiting Research Chair at UC Santa Barbara\, Professor of English & Film Studies at Wilfrid Laurier University in Ontario \n  \nThursday\, March 7\, 2019 \n4:45-5:50pm \nKinsey Pavillion 1240B \n  \nRSVP required: jjchun@asianam.ucla.edu \n  \nAbstract \nLaunched by playwright and novelist Catherine Hernandez\, Sulong Theatre Collective produced a play called Future Folk for the Carlos Bulosan Theatre in Toronto for its 2009/10 season. The performance uses indigenous Filipino music\, dance\, interviews with live-in caregivers\, humor\, poetry\, and melodrama to depict the difficulties experienced by migrant domestic workers from the Philippines in Canada. Its aim was to entertain\, but also\, more importantly\, to make people aware of the economic\, social\, familial and emotional costs to the Filipinas who participate in what Rhacel Parreñas calls the “global exportation of care” (Force of Domesticity 50). This lecture looks at the affective power of art to engage with and raise awareness of the complexity of transnational mothering performed by Filipina domestic workers in Canada through the Live-in Caregivers Program. \n  \nSpeaker bio \nEleanor Ty is Professor of English & Film Studies at Wilfrid Laurier University in Ontario. She is the Fulbright Canada Visiting Research Chair 2018-2019 at the University of California Santa Barbara where she is teaching a course on Asian American Graphic Novels.  She has published books on cultural memory\, Asian North American\, and on 18th Century literature. DESCRIPTION:Bio: Dean Itsuji Saranillio is an assistant professor in the Department of Social and Cultural Analysis at New York University.  His teaching and research interests are in settler colonialism\, alternative futures from the settler state\, Asian American and Pacific Island histories\, and Native Pacific cultural studies. He has published in numerous journals and anthologies and his first book\, Unsustainable Empire: Alternative Histories of Hawai‘i Statehood (Duke University Press\, 2008)\, thinks through the possibilities that might emerge when non-Native peoples work in place-based affinity with Native movements. \n  \nTalk description: Dean Saranillio shows that Hawai’i’s admission as a U.S. state was neither the expansion of U.S. democracy nor a strong nation swallowing a weak and feeble island nation\, but the result of a U.S. nation whose economy was unsustainable without enacting a more aggressive policy of imperialism. This talk provides a more complicated understanding of Hawai‘i’s admission as the fiftieth state and why Native Hawaiian place-based alternatives to U.S. empire are urgently needed. \n  \nWe will also be hosting a graduate student talk at the Asian American Studies Center conference room from 3-5 pm.

DESCRIPTION:Global Borderlands \nSpeaker: Victoria Reyes\, Assistant Professor of Sociology at UC Riverside. \nWednesday\, February 13\, 2019\n4:00 PM – 5:30 PM\n10383 Bunche Hall \nhttps://international.ucla.edu/cseas/event/13621 \nDescription: The U.S. military continues to be an overt presence in the Philippines\, and a reminder of the country’s colonial past. Using Subic Bay (a former U.S. military base\, now a Freeport Zone) as a case study\, Victoria Reyes argues that its defining feature is its ability to elicit multiple meanings. For some\, it is a symbol of imperialism and inequality\, while for others\, it projects utopian visions of wealth and status. \nDrawing on archival and ethnographic data\, Reyes describes the everyday experiences of people living and working in Subic Bay\, and makes a case for critically examining similar spaces across the world. These foreign-controlled\, semi-autonomous zones of international exchange are what she calls global borderlands. While they can take many forms\, ranging from overseas military bases to tourist resorts\, they all have key features in common. This new unit of globalization provides a window into broader economic and political relations\, the consequences of legal ambiguity\, and the continuously reimagined identities of the people living there. Rejecting colonialism as merely a historical backdrop\, Reyes demonstrates how it is omnipresent in our modern world.
