2018-19 Middle East Studies Fellowship – Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS)

Academic Year fellowships for Arabic, Armenian, Hebrew, Persian, Turkish and area studies.

The Center for Near Eastern Studies (CNES) administers the Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship program supporting UCLA graduate and undergraduate training in Middle East Studies and modern languages including: Arabic, Armenian, Hebrew, Persian, and Turkish. FLAS Fellowships are provided by a grant from the US Department of Education Title VI program. The purpose of the program is to enrich the nation’s pool of area and international specialists. Applicants should be planning to use their training to teach, to serve in government or international agencies, or to engage in other work that advances American understanding of other countries.

New and continuing UCLA graduate and undergraduate students in all disciplines may now apply for the 2018-19 Academic Year (AY) FLAS award. The FLAS Fellowship applications for both the 2019 Summer and AY 2019-20 will open later in Fall 2018.

Award Amounts:

• AY awards fund students for nine months and provide a total stipend of $15,000 for graduate students and $5,000 for undergraduates.
• Academic Year tuition and fees are paid up to $18,000 for graduate students and $10,000 for undergraduates.

Fellowship Requirements:

• Applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents.
• For academic year fellowships, recipients must take a full course load (a minimum of 12 units) each term including one Middle East area studies course and one ME language course, each for a letter grade, and must submit reports on the courses they pursue. Directed reading courses in the language are accepted for advanced students with advance approval. Awards may be used for dissertation research, but this must be approved in advance.
• Reporting requirements: Recipients are required by the US Department of Education to complete online reports at the beginning and end of the award period; a language proficiency evaluation must be submitted by the student’s instructor at the beginning and end of the award period; and to provide biannual reports on employment and use of the target language for a minimum of eight years after graduation.
• FLAS fellowships may be combined with supplementary funding from other funding agencies. However, in cases of parallel large grants (NSF, multiple quarter TA-ships, etc.), recipients will have to decide which grant to accept and pairing will not be allowed. You are required to inform the Center for Near Eastern Studies of any awards which you may receive during the award period.

AY Application Requirements:

• Statement of purpose of no more than 1,000 words, outlining your academic plans, career goals and area of specialization, and providing any additional information that may aid the selection committee in evaluating your application. You must indicate what relevance the study of the language of application has to the preparation to your academic program, chosen career and/or future goals.

• *Competitive preference is given to applicants who demonstrate financial need as evidenced by submission of the FAFSA. Students may demonstrate financial need by including a copy of your 2017-18 FAFSA Student Aid Report (SAR) and your most recent financial aid award letter.
